Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a condition in which skin cells proliferate much more rapidly than normal.  In plaque psoriasis, which is the most common form, this leads to raised red patches and scales.  It can appear on all areas of the body, but the scalp, elbows and knees are most commonly affected.

There are other types as well :- guttate psoriasis (raindrop-style spots of psoriasis spead over a wide area), flexural psoriasis which affects the armpits or groin, and pustular psoriasis which appears as blisters on the palms of the hand and soles of the feet.

The condition can be triggered by a number of factors such as stress, injuries to the skin and streptococcal throat infections.  In many cases sufferers have relatives who also have the condition.

Psoriasis cannot be cured, but it is possible to relieve, control and even clear it for considerable lengths of time.  Careful exposure to sunshine is usually beneficial.  Sufferers in the UK and Ireland can contact the Psoriasis Association at this address :-
